A spike of COVID-19 cases was recorded in Pathankot district with 19 more cases on Wednesday.

A pregnant woman and  SHO were among the 19 people who were tested positive for the coronavirus in Pathankot. This has again raised the high alert and fear of community spread. Since many cases emerged from the sunyara bazaar, authorities are considering closing the same.

The pregnant woman is from Bhudoria, but the Pathankot district officials refuse to reveal the details of the SHO.

Pathankot deputy commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Khaira said, infected persons include three migrant labourers (some from sunayara bazaar) and four contacts of the patients. Along with them, 10 more persons were tested positive according to their symptoms.

In Gurdaspur, the number of cases also rose by 13. Gurdaspur deputy commissioner, Mohammad Ishfaq said, six persons among 13 among the infected are from Shikarpura, and 3 in sundar nagar locatities of Batala. Both localities have been declared as containment zones and curfew has been imposed to restrict movement of people. This is the total highest number of cases reported in a day in Pathankot and Gurdaspur respectively.

Dr Kishan Chand’s Thoughts

Pathankot’s Dr Krishan Chand said the health department has also appointed officers for conducting medical tests of contacts of patients. He expressed concern over a few people because they are not ready to go under quarantine, which will be a threat to public safety. “Such people will be dealt under section 188 of IPC,” he said
